Memorial benches in our parks

Islington Council has a long tradition of installing memorial benches in parks. We provide a standard bench constructed of teak from a sustainable source which can be engraved with a suitable inscription. We do not put plaques on existing benches.

How to ask for a memorial bench in a park

If you would like to have a memorial bench placed in one of our parks, follow these steps.

  1. Let us know the site and location where you would like the bench. If there is a bench without an inscription, we can replace it with a new bench for you and we will always try to put it in your choice of location but it may not always be possible. We can suggest another place we think is right for the bench.
  2. Tell us the inscription that you would like on the bench.
  3. We will give you a quote and a picture of what the bench in its location might look like for you to say yes or no to.
  4. When you have approved the quote and design, we will order and install the bench. Delivery of the bench takes about eight to ten weeks. We will need around two weeks to install the bench after that.
  5. When you are happy with the bench, we will send you a bill to pay.

Cost

The benches with the engraving and installation usually cost between £850 and £1,000.

Ask for a memorial bench

Contact us by email on environment@islington.gov.uk to ask for a memorial bench. Make sure to include the information on this page in your email.

Maintaining the bench

We are responsible for the maintenance of the bench and will do this for as long as we can. Many of the benches in our parks are over 30 years old.

If a bench is damaged or becomes expensive to repair, we will remove the bench to make sure the park stays safe for everyone. We will try to contact you or the person who placed the order and tell them what we have done. If we can't contact the right person, we will offer the space where the bench was to someone else.

We will keep a record of your contact details but if these change, you should contact us to update the details we have.
